Xiaomi Launches Mix 2S with AI Powered Cameras and without the "Notch"

Xiaomi today launched the Mi Mix 2S in China which is an upgrade to the Mix 2. The Xiaomi Mix series is well known for its bezel-less displays. The first smartphone in the Mix series is the Mi Mix which was launched 2 years back.

The Mix 2S was launched in an event held in China. The device runs on the latest Snapdragon 845 processor from the Qualcomm family clocked at 2.8GHz and paired with 6GB / 8GB LPDDR4X RAM. There are three variants available. The lower one with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, then standard edition with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and the premium edition with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. However, these storages are not expandable, meaning there is no MicroSD card slot availability. The biggest advantage of the device is the availability of a 5.99-inch bezel-less display giving 81.9% screen-to-body ratio. It is an IPS LCD display with 2160 x 1080 (FHD+) resolution and 403 PPI pixel density. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The display also supports HDR when playing HDR-10 content. Luckily there is no notch kudos to Xiaomi for that. There is a thin chin available where the front camera and sensors are mounted.

The device runs on MIUI 9.5 on top of Android Oreo 8.0. The device weighs 189g and measures 8.1 mm thickness. The Mix 2S supports dual Nano SIM cards and supports all global network bands.

The photography of the device is powered by dual 12MP (f/1.8 and f/2.4) with one wide angle and one telephoto lens. The presence of Sony IMX363 sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 1.4-micron pixels we could expect a good low light photography from the device. The Cameras are further enriched with the addition of AI (Artificial Intelligence). The cameras also feature 2x optical zoom, 4-axis OIS, dual tone dual LED flash and dual pixel PDAF. The rear camera supports 4K video recording at 30 FPS and 1080p Video recording at 30FPS. Slow motion recordings are limited to 240FPS at both 1080p and 720p. The front has a 5MP camera with AI support.

The Mi Mix 2S is powered by 3400 mAh battery. The provided charger supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 while the wireless charging supports standard QI Wireless Charging (7.5W). Connectivity includes Dual band Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi MIMO Technology, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS (A-GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou), 3.5mm Headphone Jack, NFC and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Sensors include Ultrasonic distance sensor, Gyro, Proximity, Hall, Magnetometer (Compass), Acceleration and Barometer. There are two color variants Black and White.

The device is priced at ¥3299 which is approximately $525 or ₹32,999. Unfortunately, the device is now available only in China. Later on, the device will be eventually released in major markets. US market could expect the device in later 2018 or early 2019.
