5G launch in India | Dangers of 5G | The Dope Techs

5G- the term that has been revolving around us for a long time. The revolutionary 5th generation of telecom service brings many new upgrades to the existing 4th generation communication technology 4G.

In India 4G revolution came by Reliance Jio which offered data at a very low price forcing other network companies to lower their prices. We all remember when we used 1GB 3G/4G data for a month at Rs 199/. After Jio revolution, we are now using 1.5GB/day for 28 days at a much lesser price for Rs 149/. Government telecom BSNL is still unable to provide 4G service across India.

In US, 5G services have been deployed by all major carriers. They are in trial phase. If you're in US and you need to see how 5G works, you still need to buy a 5G capable device such as Samsung Galaxy note 10 5G, Samsung Galaxy S10+, LG ThinQ 5G.,etc. 5G needs a separate  of modem to  work and won't work in 4G devices. There are only few 5G devices available in the market that too expensive devices only.

Canada, Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, South America, United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan and China were the other countries that have launched 5G on trial basis.

5G speeds and capabilities

5G can provide speeds up to 1 Gigabits per second (Gbps). Peak speeds can go up to 10 Gbps. Real world test shows, speeds up to 1 Gbps. 5G uses millimeter waves (Upto 60Ghz)which can carry data at a faster rate but can not carry to a long range. It can also use sub 6Ghz range. Latency of 5G is said to have 1-4 milli seconds while real world test show 6-10 milli seconds. Compared to 4G which has 40-60ms latency, 5G is 10x faster in all terms.  Consider downloading a movie in 4G takes 10 minutes, the same can be downloaded in 5G within minutes.

Dangers of 5G

There are many rumors spreading that 5G caused the death of many birds during its trial runs. But that ain't true. Sources claim that birds might have died due to different reasons.

Another rumor is that, 5G may cause cancer. IARC (International Agency of Research on Cancer) study reveals that there is no direct possible connection of cancer and 5G. Research on the same claims that there is no possible evidence of cancer caused due to 5G.

5G In India

We may expect 5G trials in late 2020. Indian telecom operators feels that 5G spectrum is priced way higher than global prices. Bharati Airtel already invested in MIMO technology to enable 5G in future. Airtel has already deployed this spectrum in Kolkata and Bangalore.

The 5G India Forum, launched at the end of August by the cellular operators association of India (COAI), aims to boost the local ecosystem towards the implementation of 5G technology. Unlike 4G, 5G doesn't require large towers, small box is enough which can be mounted on top of existing poles. Incase of using millimeter waves more of these boxes are needed because millimeter waves cannot travel to a long distance and if any objects is in front of the waves, millimeter waves cannot pass through.

Despite the set back presented by the challenges associated with spectrum pricing, Indian operators are continuing to push towards 5G deployment.
