Brazil Government Blocks Its Citizens From Using WhatsApp

A Brazilian Judge ordered the local telecom operators to block WhatsApp after it denied to handover the data relating to an investigation.Any carriers that refuses to comply with the order will be fined upto $142,000 per day.

Roughly about 100 million users are unable to send or receive messages through WhatsApp. WhatsApp CEO, Jan Koum in a Facebook post said about the cause why they are not able to handover the data. This is due to the latest implementation of end to end encryption which they implemented about a month ago and also WhatsApp do not store any messages in its server.Because of these reasons WhatsApp is unable to produce the data asked by the Police department. The 72 hours block came into effect at 2 PM local time.

This is not the first time Brazil blocked WhatsApp. Previously a 48 hours block was imposed in December,  2015.During this time period, Telegram another messaging service app gained popularity overtime leading to jamming of country's SMS gateway due to overload of SMS verification codes sent.
